History

Introduction

The Department of History opened in 1972 as the History Section within the Department of the Education for Social Science, Education College, Inha University. In 1980, the History Section was relocated to the Faculty of Humanities and designated the Department of History; a move which functioned foster a greater number of students endowed with exacting academic skills leading to the graduate school program. Since then, the department has produced approximately fifty master and doctoral degree holders.

To enable students to acquire the knowledge of history in the various fields
To train students to obtain and use historical perspective and thought
To provide students with the skills necessary for historical research - languages, fieldwork techniques, excavation skill, and research article writings
To raise students’ awareness of their roles as responsible specialists of history and culture at the international/national/local (Metropolitan Incheon) levels

Program Information

For the undergraduate students, fifty four basic courses covering the histories of Korea, East Asia, and Europe/America are provided. In the field of Korean history, the department has specialists in ancient history, the history of the Koryo dynasty, and the history of the Choson dynasty. Two specialists are responsible for teaching East Asian history, which consists of the history of China and the history of Southeast Asia. Western history, falling under the French history specialist's responsibility, is taught with separate classes on ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary histories. Students are encouraged to conduct field-trips both inside and outside Korea every semester, with the financial support of department. During the fourth year, each student is required to compose an undergraduate thesis under the guidance of a professor in the department.
