Leave of Absence

A student files a leave of absence when he/she discontinues study temporarily for approved reasons.

Type

Ordinary Leave of Absence

A student may file an ordinary temporary leave absence for unavoidable reasons such as family affairs or medical issues.

Leave of Absence for Military Service

A student may file a leave of absence for military service, while enrolled or while on an ordinary leave of absence, to fulfill his obligation to perform military service.

* New students, re-admitted students and transfer students cannot file a leave of absence during their first semester except for the following reasons: illness that requires hospitalization for more than 4 weeks, or living abroad for more than 6 months due to parents’ work obligations in a public organization or overseas corporation.

Filing Time and Procedure

Ordinary Leave of Absence

  • Within the first quarter of the semester
    「Log on to the Inha Portal - INS (학사행정) - Enrollment Service (학적) - Request for Enrollment Status Change (학적변동신청) - Ordinary leave of absence」and obtain a confirmation from the supervising college. Students can check their status on-line through「Request for Enrollment Status Change (학적변동신청)- Request status (신청내역조회)-Ordinary leave of absence」
  • After the first quarter of the semester has passed students may still file a leave of absence. (After the third quarter of a semester has passed, students cannot file an ordinary leave of absence)
    Visit the office of the supervising college or department → Fill out an application form for an ordinary leave of absence (available at the college’s administration department) and submit → Receive a confirmation for a leave of absence.

※ An exception for those who file a leave of absence for the current semester: students on a leave of absence are not allowed to graduate just after taking summer/winter session.

Leave of Absence for Military Service

  • Students who wish to file a leave of absence for military service must fill out a prescribed application form from the university and submit the application form, together with a copy of enlistment notification, to the administration department of their college, then obtain a confirmation notice. .
  • Fill out an application form for leave of absence for military service. (available at the college’s administration department) →Submit it to the administration department
  • Receive a confirmation notice for leave of absence.
  • If a student has an overdue book or LAN card, he/she must return them; otherwise he/she will not be able to obtain confirmation for a leave of absence.
  • Check for confirmation of leave of absence status by: 「Logging on to the Inha Portal - INS (학사행정) - Enrollment Service (학적) - Request for Enrollment Status Change (학적변동신청) - Personal Information (신상정보)」

※ Cancellation of a leave of absence in the current semester: Fill out a cancellation form for leave of absence to the supervising department’s office. (Students cannot automatically return to school even if course registration is completed and tuition fees are paid in full.)

Leave of Absence Period

Ordinary Leave of Absence

Students may extend an ordinary leave of absence as many times as they need. When the original leave of absence has expired, students must file another application form and extend the period for a second or additional time.

Leave of Absence for Military Service

Defined as when a student cannot attend university due to enlistment in the military in accordance with the military service law of Korea.

Grade Recognition

Ordinary Leave of Absence

No grade will be recognized.

Leave of Absence for Military Service

  • Enlisting before the third quarter of a semester while enrolled: No grade will be recognized.
  • Enlisting after the third quarter of a semester while enrolled: Grade earned so far will be recognized

Grade recognition procedure for those who join the army

Fill out a certificate of grade assessment for courses completed. Available at the Undergraduate Student Office → Check courses registered. → Check the advisor’s approval for grade recognition. → Submit it to the office of your department (major) and to the administration department.

Enrollment Status

In the case of ordinary leave of absence

  • Filing the application before the first quarter of a semester has passed: Tuition paid for the semester will substitute the tuition of the returning semester.
  • Filing the application after the first quarter of a semester has passed: Tuition paid will not be applied to any future semesters.

In the case of leave of absence for military service

  • Enlisting before the third quarter of a semester: Tuition paid for the semester will substitute the tuition of the returning semester after being discharged from military service.
  • Enlisting after the third quarter of a semester (date of enlistment being the basic date): Tuition paid will not be applied to any future semesters and student must re-enroll for the returning semester.

Procedure regarding Students on Military Service who are Ordered To Return Home

If a student is deemed ineligible to serve in army following the routine military physical and are ordered to return home, the student must fill out a statement of home return order (available at the college administration department) and submit it to the college’s administration department within a week. In case a student wishes to return to school after submitting the statement before the first quarter of a semester has passed, the student will be allowed to return to school. At any point after the first quarter of a semester has passed, students must submit a petition for an ordinary leave of absence. If a student receives re-enlistment notification even after filing the return-home-order statement, he must submit a petition for a leave of absence for military service again.

To-do's When A Student Was Ordered To Return Home

If a student is deemed as ineligible to serve the army after the routine physical check-up and ordered to return home, the student must fill out a statement of home return order (available at the college administration department) and submit it to the college’s administration department within a week. In case a student wishes to return to school after submitting the statement before 1/4 of a semester has passed, the student will be allowed to return to school. At any point after 1/4 of a semester has passed, students must submit a petition of ordinary leave of absence. If a student receives re-enlistment notification even after filing the return-home-order statement, he must submit a petition of leave of absence for military service again.

Other Reminders

Of those on an ordinary leave of absence, students who are serving in the army MUST file a petition of leave of absence for military service. Otherwise, those students will be expelled from school.

Those who had joined the army as a private but then chose to become a professional soldier (which means long-term military service) must immediately be advised of their school register status by the college’s administration department. (After 3 years of military service, they will be removed from the school register.)

Ordinary Leave of Absence and Tuition Fees for Students who use an Installment Plan

If a student who is paying the tuition fees on installment plan would like to apply for an ordinary leave of absence before the first quarter of the semester has passed, he/she should cancel the application for payment on an installment plan, otherwise he/she cannot apply for leave of absence online.

Refund of Tuition Fees

  • Before the first quarter of the semester has passed: The paid payment portions will be returned (Leave of absence for military service, before the third quarter of the semester has passed).
  • After the first quarter of the semester has passed: The tuition fees which have already paid on the installment plan will not be returned.
